WITHOUT YALTA

MIROSŁAW PIOTROWSKI

The European Parliament In Strasburg rejected a request for introducing a debate on the 50th anniversary of conference in Yalta into the schedule of debates. Polish euro-deputies from a group of European Conservatives and Reformers were appealing for a short resolution and debate. Despite presenting the request, they were using an argument that this conference pushed away European integration by 50 years, in the final voting the initiative has failed. Expressing his opinion against it, a Belgian euro-deputy used an argument that these issues should be left to historians, instead of engaging the European Parliament. After the unsuccessful voting, the clear anger was expressed by an experienced euro-deputy from the Civic Platform, belonging to the biggest fraction in the European Parliament, accusing initiators that the action was badly and unprofessionally carried out. An agreement among chiefs of the fraction should have been made earlier – he argued.

However, the problem is that the ‘Yalta initiative was carried out earlier according to pragmatics from there. First, it was supported by the whole conservative group, and later its chair person submitted this request during Conferences of Representatives of all political groups. However, it was rejected. A permissible request formulated by the Polish euro-deputy Marek Jurek, was a kind of a gesture of despair, a result of a final voting not difficult to foresee.

However, why is such detest and nervousness of some European politicians? Was the reminder for 30 minutes in the forum of the European Parliament about how the prime minister of Great Britain, the president of the USA and the leader of the Soviet Union divided Germany and Europe 50 years ago, has only a historic aspect? In fact the main decisions, including the one about giving Poland under the Soviet sphere of influences, similarly as today, were made earlier in the end of the year 1943 during a conference in Teheran. Leaders of countries, similarly as today, met together and discussed important international issues. Not all decisions were and are made public. Is the opposition to the reminder about those events in the European forum caused by fear against a parallel imposed on the modern times? So, we are without Yalta. More time has been left for other issues as, for example, common works of the Parliamentary Meeting European Union and countries of Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific.
