Benedict XVI in the Mother's house at Jasna Gora

Katarzyna Woynarowska, Fr Robert Lukaszuk, OSPPE

Benedict XVI brought a gift of two popes to Jasna Gora: two roses, which Paul VI was to give the Mother of God in 1966, the Millennium of Poland's Christianity. Then the communist government did not allow him to come to Poland. Benedict XVI conducted a Eucharistic service at the foot of Jasna Gora Hill, on the commons that were fully packed. »

Great witness of adherence to faith and to the Holy Father

Tadeusz A. Janusz

Referring to the motto of his pilgrimage to Poland the Holy Father Benedict XVI told the faithful who gathered in Holy Mass in Blonie Park on 28 May 2006, the Feast of Ascension of the Lord, 'I ask you to stand firm in your faith! Stand firm in your hope! Stand firm in your love! Amen!' »

Hot Polish May

Fr Ireneusz Skubis

This year Polish May, always saturated with Marian prayer, is filled with international events. Benedict XVI, Successor of St Peter, makes his first visit to the country of his predecessor, John Paul II. The appalling film 'The Da Vinci Code' is on in Polish cinemas. The Catholic Weekly 'Niedziela' tries to introduce and explain the meaning of these events. We have enclosed a special academic insert, which is a response to the film and the blasphemous Dan Brown's book. »

Oak of John Paul II

Wojciech Mscichowski

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of 'Niedziela' an oak was planted in the yard of our editorial office. The oak grew out of the acorn that John Paul II had blessed. »

Let us reflect before we criticise

Fr Ireneusz Skubis

Before we mindlessly hurl insults at Radio Maryja we should listen to this station. We will hear the prayer of the wounded people who trust God with their problems, we hear about helping the neighbour, about care for the homeland and about numerous other daily matters of Polish families. First of all, millions of listeners of Radio Maryja deserve respect. »

'Niedziela' as a burning torch for those who walk in darkness

Agnieszka Raczynska-Lorek

The celebration of the 80th anniversary of 'Niedziela' began in Chruszczobrod, the home parish of Rev. Msgr. Ireneusz Skubis, the editor-in-chief of the Weekly, who is also celebrating the 25th anniversary of his work for 'Niedziela'. The live broadcast of the Mass on Television Polonia made the readers of 'Niedziela' all over the world participate in the feast of the Catholic Weekly, which at Easter, the Resurrection of the Lord, started the 9th decade of its mission of evangelisation. »

Radio Maryja as the target of the media

Fr Ireneusz Skubis

We are in a special situation again: we are waiting for the first pilgrimage of the Holy Father Benedict XVI to our homeland, the government coalition is being formed and the election of local authorities is approaching. Therefore, I am surprised that almost all media in Poland, radio and television stations as well as the biggest newspapers, have launched a frontal attack against the Torun radio. Radio Maryja and Trwam TV have withstood these attacks in a rather reserved way. »

And it still makes a difference to us

At Easter, in 1926, exactly 80 years ago, the first edition of 'Niedziela' was published. The black and white paper was addressed to local readers, to the faithful of the newly erected Diocese of Czestochowa. In the year 2006 the Catholic Weekly 'Niedziela' is the biggest Catholic paper in Poland. It reaches the Polish communities in the whole world, has its own web portal, radio studio, television studio and 20 diocesan editions, including the primate Warsaw and distant America. »

Time and space of Polish Easter holidays

Danuta Nespiak

Easter is the biggest Christian holiday, is a holiday of hope; it commemorates the victory of Christ over death and sin. No philosophical system or institution of this world can cross out this truth of history. »

Vows in the period of slavery and on the threshold of freedom

Fr Jan Pach, OSPPE

Jasna Gora - world known Marian shrine is also a treasury of Poland's history. Throughout centuries there were many important circumstances when Poles solemnly dedicated themselves to Mary. »

'Let us save man with Mary'

Dorota Skibinska talks to Fr Stanislaw Jarosz, OSPPE, Definitor General of the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit.

We hear people complaining, criticising, judging. We are being bombarded with bad news in various media. What can I who have no influence on politics or decision-makers do when I see so much injustice, unemployment, poverty...? The Jasna Gora Sanctuary has taken the initiative 'Gift of Prayer'. »

Television adventure of 'the Bishop of Children'

Fr Piotr Zaborski, programme director of the Catholic Radio FIAT, talks to Bishop Antoni Dlugosz, frequent visitor of the TV programme 'Ziarno'.

Who does not know the singing bishop from the Sunday television programme 'Ziarno' [Seed]? 'Some parents are a little jealous of the sympathy the kids have for me', says Bishop Antoni Dlugosz of Czestochowa. »

Great National Vows

Fr Jan Pach, OSPPE

The year 2006 is the time of great national anniversaries for the Polish people. Jasna Gora, where the kings and nation dedicated their Homeland to the Mother of God, becomes the icon of 'all that Poland is'. »

Helping every day

Rev. Msgr. Ireneusz Skubis talks to Rev. Dr. Adam Deren, Director of Caritas Polska, and Rev. Dr. Zdzislaw Swiniarski, Vice-director of Caritas Polska.

It is hard to imagine some area of scarcity, poverty, tragedy or suffering in Poland and in the world that is left without the immediate reaction of Caritas Polska. The work of Caritas is not one spectacular media show, but it is hard work every day, work that is full of sacrifice of thousands of people. »

Gron Jana Pawla II (Peak of John Paul II)

Anna Cichoblazinska

The people of the mountains built a chapel for the Man of the Mountains in the Beskidy Range. Today the builders of the chapel, their friends and all those who love the places, where God is so close to reach, pray for the beatification of the Servant of God John Paul II in the chapel, located on Gron Jana Pawla. »
