STATEMENT OF THE SPOKESMAN OF THE POLISH EPISCOPAL CONFERENCE IN RELATION TO CONSENT OF THE SEYM TO THE DANGEROUS CONVENTION

On 6 February 2015 the Seym accepted the Act about ratification of the Europe Council Convention about prevention and fighting violence against women and domestic violence, made in Istanbul on 11 May 2011. The Act accepted by the Seym authorizes the president of the Polish Republic to ratify the convention. Here is a full text of the statement:

The decision of MPs voting for accepting the Act about ratification of the CAHVIO Convention is a signal that their priority is not the good of a married couple, family and demographic future of Poland.

The Polish Episcopal Conference emphasizes once again that violence used against anybody is contradictory with rules of Christian faith and should be eliminated from inter-human relations. However, the convention does not introduce any new legal solutions counteracting violence. Whereas, it relates the phenomenon of violence with tradition or weaknesses of particular people.

The Episcopal Conference reminds again that the convention restricts sovereign competences of Poland in the matters of ethics and family protection through giving rights of control to the committee of the so-called experts (GREVIO) deprived of any demographic legitimacy, which will emphasize what standards in legal, educational policy Poland is to implement, and judge our country about sluggishness in the change of still present traditional model of the society.
